If you head over to IRS.gov/refund, you’ll find the IRS’ “Where’s My Refund?” tool. 24 hours after electronically filing your taxes, you can check on the status of your money on the IRS website. You can also access “Where’s My Refund?” on the IRS2Go app on your smart phone. It usually takes 21 days to get your refund after you e-filed your return, if you chose direct deposit and have no processing delays.
Remember, don’t rely on getting your refund by a specific date. Some returns require additional review and may take longer to process. Also, if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit, the law says the IRS must hold the entire refund and can’t issue it before mid-February. Keep in mind the time it takes your bank or financial institution to post the refund to your account or for you to receive it by mail.
You might be wondering if you should call the IRS to find out your refund status. The answer is no, unless “Where’s My Refund?” tells you to call them.
