If you’re a long-time business owner, or just thinking about starting a new venture and working for yourself, you should know about the IRS Small Business & Self-Employed Tax Center. This online tool is your one-stop resource to help you learn about the tax issues involved in owning your own business. To access the site, visit IRS.gov/SmallBiz.

There you’ll find information organized into six categories, for every phase of your business. For example, you’ll find information on choosing your business structure, differentiating between a business and a hobby, participating in the sharing econmy, and even a checklist for starting your business. You can click on “A-Z Index for Business” for an alphabetized list of more than 450 topics.

Other popular links include hiring employees, IRS forms and publications, preparing your taxes, tax credits and deductions, and recordkeeping. There is an online learning center which includes a video portal, upcoming in-person events, and virtual workshops.

Check to see if there are tax centers dedicated to your specific type of business. The IRS has tax centers for day cares, restaurants, and truckers, just to name a few.
